Edith Chaiken Welty died at a local hospital Saturday, February 24, 2007, after a long battle with cancer. She was born in Brooklyn, NY, April 12, 1948. Edie worked at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, as a medical secretary. She met her husband, Philip, there. When Phil retired they moved to Maine. Edie enjoyed spending time with her family, reading mystery novels, volunteering in the community and playing cards. Her cats were a great comfort to her. She was predeceased by her husband, Philip; her father, Marvin Chaiken; and her brother, Stephen Chaiken. She is survived by her mother, Frances Chaiken of Portland; her brother and his wife, Paul and Debora Chaiken of Bangor; her step-children, Philip Craig and Deirdre; and several nieces and nephews: Joel, Jessica, Jennifer, Alex and Emma Chaiken. The family wishes to thank her devoted caretaker, Sundie Lavigne, for her generous support of Edie. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cancer Community Center, 778 Main Street, So.
